Stop The Lies
Protest The Fox News Network
Wed Sept 1st 2004 from 7 - 9pm | 48th st and 6th Ave

The Fox News Network spreads lies and disinformation that threaten the very foundations of our democracy. Fox sells us news without context and the official government version of news without critique or analysis. In effect FOX, while fronting as "Fair and Balanced", has become the mouth piece of the Bush administration as it tramples our Bill of Rights, sends our nation into war based on lies, and continues to use the WTC attacks of September 11th to justify their empire building "war on terrorism".

Never have the lies perpetuated by Fox been so blatant as during the lead up to the latest war in Iraq. However, their deceptions are not new. As well as being a creation of Fox's right wing agenda, these lies are a tangible byproduct of its corporate model that emphasizes sales and growth above all else. Increasing profits and finding new markets are their primary concerns.

Corporate Media

Fox News Network is a subsidiary of The News Corporation whose cable, television, internet, newspaper, film, magazine and book empire spans the globe. The News Corporation is the best example of the dangers of corporate media control, but it is not unique. Today most of our news comes from 5 main mega-corporations News Corporation, Vivendi Universal, AOL Time Warner, The Walt Disney Co, and Viacom whose monopolistic control of the media limits the diversity of voices, opinions, and critiques. Even our "public" news outlets, PBS and NPR, are influenced by the perspectives and pressures of their corporate underwriters.

The control of information by corporate interests needs to end! We can't afford to have the effectiveness of GE's "smart bombs" sold to us by GE's news outlet NBC, coverage of tobacco lawsuits and health issues provided by Rupert Murdoch CEO of News Corporation and member of the Board of Directors at Philip Morris, CBS report on energy issues when its' parent corporation operates 4 government-owned nuclear power plants in the US, or PBS examine the process of globalization with direct funding from Enron and Chevron.

Its Time For Change

  • We need community-funded independent media.
  • We need media that is accessible and responsive to the public.
  • We need media to watch dog government and big business and help insure the safety of our communities and environment.
  • We need more media like that being produced at DemocracyNow!, in the directly democratic Indymedia Network , The Pacifica Network (WBAI 99.5 in NYC), Guerrilla News Network, Paper Tiger TV, and Narco News.

    The Bigger Picture

This is not just about our access to information. Almost every aspect of our lives, from the food we eat, the air we breath, our housing options, health care, education and the wars we are sent to fight, like media, are dominated by concerns of profit maximization, accumulation and expansion.

Why are we allowing our lives to be controlled by big business and their representatives in government? We should have input and control over the most basic decisions in our lives. Human concern, public interest and the welfare, health, and security of our communities should determine public policy. We must mainstream independent media, break the corporate control of information, and take back control over our lives. We can begin by challenging the propaganda produced by Fox News every day.

It's time to mobilize and protest the lies of Fox News.

It is time to change the national discourse, and help usher in a new era of independent, un-imbedded journalism.

On Sunday the 29th of August 2004 the world will unite to say No to Bush and his war of aggression.

On Wednesday Sept. 1st, 2004 we will challenge the network that is most responsible for bringing his lies to the public.
